I Can Has?

Greetings!

The Other Boleyn Girl.

I decided to unplug myself last night. I was tired of staring at my computer…tired of watching hockey (*gasp!*)…tired of playing with my fish, tooting my horn, and starting ghost hunts…tired of trying to figure out how to work the phrase “best weight loss pills” into a sentence…tired of everything. I’d been in front of my computer just about all day…I’d gotten out of work at 11:15 AM and was home a little bit after 12. By 9 PM, I was done. I walked away from my computer and crashed out on the futon in the living room, determined to relax sans computer and watch some TV.

I was flipping channels when I came across The Last Boleyn Girl on one of the movie channels. It was a movie that I’d been wanting to watch, so I settled in to watch it, even though I’d missed the first 20 minutes.

I’ll be the first to admit, my love and adoration for The Tudors series on Showtime makes me very biased. Natalie Dormer portrayed the best Anne Boleyn that I’ve ever seen before, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII…well, need I say more? Eric Bana, while easy on the eyes, just doesn’t compare to the intense portrayal of King Henry by Rhys Meyers.

Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Anne Boleyn was just…awful. Her fake British accent was pathetic, unlike Scarlett Johansson, who pulled hers off perfectly as Mary Boleyn. The acting was…okay. And that’s about it. The story was too rushed…too much important information was tossed aside to make what turned out to be a fluff movie. I was honestly hoping for better, but I was sorely disappointed. I’m really glad that I didn’t waste my money to see this in the theater.

I’m really hoping that the book The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory isn’t as bad as the movie was, but I’m not holding my breath. Since the movie was based off of the book, I have a feeling it’s going to be just as bad.

This is what happens when one studies history. Movies like this can be extremely disappointing, especially when one studies the time period and the people that the movie happens to be about. It’s a good thing I have the last disc of Season 2 of The Tudors left to watch…at least they stayed decently close to what really happened in Tudor England…and the acting is fantabulous!
